Consumers are increasingly becoming more comfortable with mobile banking, payment and shopping to the point where the value of global transactions on the go will jump from $162 billion in 2010 to nearly a $1 trillion by 2014, according to research firm Yankee Group.

Less than a month after rolling out its mobile payment technology across the United States, coffee giant Starbucks says its customers have made 1 million payments via the app-based system -- which stores a virtual Starbucks Card on a mobile phone, for scanning at the register.

A microfinance pilot project pioneered in Africa turned into one of the world's most successful mobile banking systems thanks to one woman's bus fare getting stolen. Now the service could make its way to the United Kingdom.

According to Google executives, two-thirds of all purchases and half of transactions will occur on mobile devices by 2015.  Consumer coupons will also transition from their current rate of 80 percent push to 80 percent opt-in four years from now, said David Shapiro, Google's director of small business marketing.

Two Texas banks have introduced mobile banking services from First Data Corp. American Bank of Texas in Marble Falls and Waggoner National Bank in Vernon are now using First Data's Mobile Manager mBanking system.

A study of 20 financial institutions around the world that offer mobile banking, commissioned by Accenture and conducted by TowerGroup, has found a Middle Eastern bank that is getting an eye-popping 300 percent return on investment by letting its two million mobile banking customers pay bills on their mobile devices.

PayPal says mobile commerce is taking off in Australia and will be a big area of growth in 2011.  "In Australia mobile payments grew 12 fold in 2010, reaching a value of $35 million up from just $2.7 million in 2009," says Frerk-Malte Feller of PayPal.
